Garming GPS 76s

I have owned a Garmin Handheld GPS for many years and I bought this as a replacement for it.

Pros:
- Great bright clear screen
- Good GPS reception
- Sturdy construction
- Attractive design
- Intuitive menus

Cons:
- Had difficulty with installing software on my Vista laptop

I’ve used this unit for geocaching and it takes me right to the cache. After rebate the unit will end up costing $129, so for the price it is a good value. Do not load all the software if you don’t need it. I only entered a few of the maps of places I go or plan to go, not all of them, so this cut down considerably on map loading time. The first time I loaded all the maps onto my computer, it took about 30 minutes. Loading straight from the geocaching site is very easy, and the unit holds the cache description as well. I find the screen visually appealing. I’m very pleased and prefer it over my Garmin E-trex Legend.

I had previously bought a Magellan in the same price range from a local “big box” store. Only to find out it didn’t have local roads, contours, or anything much,and those couldn’t be added, due to lack of memory.

The Earthmate comes with maps on DVD (which would have been $99 extra for the Magellan) showing back roads, hiking trails, streams, railroads. Quite useful.
PN-20 works well, seems pretty accurate - within 50 - 75 feet when driving, closer when walking or not moving. Altimeter and speedometer seem very accurate. Takes a while to “find itself” when first turned on, but keeps up after that.

I’d rate it “very good” - does all I could expect for the price.

For the ones thinking of getting a gps for golf, I really do like this one. It is easy and simple to use. Easy to see outside in the sunlight and understand. I had my doubts after reading other reviews, like it eats a lot of batteries, so I did get the recharchable energizers and I have played three rounds with the same ones so far. The only bad expieriance I did have was with the downloading of the courses on it the first time. Getting help from the tech support department really sux. They only work from 9-4 Pacific Time and only on weekdays. But I found out on my own that I had to be hooked up directly into the computer USB port,and not through a USB hub. After that everything was simple. I have playing buddys that have different kinds of gps systems. But I do like this one the best, because of the easy reading and simplicity of it. Maybe the 2009 model may be better but I still like this one.
And it really does help your game knowing the exact yardage from your ball to the center of the green, and it is very accurate.
This GPS is worth the investment.

The GolfLogix product has served me very well for a month now. I find battery life to be acceptable (4-6 rounds on rechargeable batteries), and I carry a spare set on AA’s in my bag just in case. Accuracy has been good overall - I am typically +/- 3 yards at the 150 and 100 markers, which is probably due to defining the “middle of the green.” I am very impressed with the ease of use - just start it up, wait a minute or two, and the device knows which course to use. It also automatically proceeds to the next hole. Bottom line is that the unit requires almost no “fiddling” during a round. I made a simple wooden holder to attach it to my golf cart (Sun Mountain speed cart) and as I walk up to my ball I know the distance. The yardage for the bunkers, hazards, etc. works well. I find I am much more efficient and can play faster with this device compared to my laser yardage device. Now I just need to find something to improve my swing!
