Garming GPS 76s

I bought the e-trex Legend C and have only used it for driving to and from different locations in my work truck. I work at new neighborhoods alot and our “street guide” people provide directions to new streets but only for a while. After that you have to use a map if you don’t update your software. Garmin stated that they are not providing updates any longer for the Legend C. So if you buy anything, buy the Legend CX or something else. I have City Select but I understood it to include any software.

I have had my unit for about 3 weeks and the maps seem to be perfect. I live in a city greater than 6 Million people and have yet to have an issue with poor map details. For under 100 bucks, you cannot go wrong.

The Good:

Route recalculation. A lot of times I know the general area of where I want to go, but need to know the specific location on the block of my destination. This unit is great at adapting on the fly when I take an alternate route that I know to be faster.

Unimproved street indicators. In my city, Portland, OR, there are a lot of “unimproved” blocks of streets, and by “unimproved” I mean a HMMWV would be the required vehicle for safe, non-destruction of undercarriage travel. I have heard others complain that their GPS units will route them through these blocks and cause obvious delays at having to reroute. I have found that many, although unfortunately not all, such blocks are differentiated on my map with a darker line so I can avoid them if I am routed through or know to not take the shortcut if I wonder why I wasn’t routed via that street.

The would-like-improved:

Base settings. Maybe I can do this, but I would like to have the option to have all destinations be in Portland automatically to save me the step of spelling out PORT every time I input an address. If I am going elsewhere out of the city, I am rarely in a hurry and the extra 10 seconds isn’t a second thought.

One touch return to map. Others have mentioned this. The fact that I have to back-track through menus to get to the map is annoying. Plus, that “restore” button looks so appealing for this task. I’m not sure why the means to restore factory settings is so prominent.

The yet-to-try-but-plan-to:

Trails. I’m not planning on treating this as a backwoods nav tool, but I have some areas near my house that have trails great for biking and walking that are pretty confusing. I’ve gotten spun around several times, and I’d like to get the topos on a card and throw the unit in my fanny pack for those times I get confused.

After researching various GPS options, I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 350 with the current European map to take with me to Germany. I was mostly traveling alone and walking was my primary mode of transportation within the cities I visited.

The 350 did a great job of directing me on foot. The routes it provided included paths and bridges that were exclusively for walkers and bikers. It displayed rounded arrows where I should use stairways. It pinpointed my location during a Rhine River boat ride.

I walked through the Tiergarten in Berlin. It seemed to recognize that I wanted to stay in the park, so it gave me a route back to the hotel that consisted of paths within the park.

At one point I met up with friends. We used the 350 to successfully navigate in the car and on foot. I had detailed maps in my pocket-size Nuvi for use at some unexpected stops.

The 350 stayed powered for my entire day’s excursions, about six hours for the time I needed directions.

I felt I had so much more freedom to explore and a much higher comfort level while traveling in a foreign country.

This device greatly enhanced the enjoyment and level of safety of my trip.
